Even though this is my seventh year attending the Triumph of the Cross Prayer Service, the experience never gets old. The purpose of this outdoor event is to celebrate Jesus’ victory over death. The entire student body, from sixth graders to seniors, stands outside the main entrance together as one. Students from St. Martin de Porres Marianist School also attend, adding to the Marianist family atmosphere. Students are involved in every aspect of the day’s celebration. Juniors proclaim the reading and the Litany. High school students sing in the Gregorian Consortium, while others set up and clean up for S.A.L.T. The wooden cross we received in homeroom will not only serve as a reminder to keep Christ at the center of our lives, but also as a fond memory of an event only at Kellenberg Memorial.
Led by Brianna Lausev’s 15:18.96 performance for the 2.5 mile course, the Lady Firebird Cross Country team won the “Large School Race” at the 29th annual Wilton Invitational held at the renown “Allen Meadows” course in Wilton, Ct. Lausev’s time in her fourth place finish was the team’s second fastest time ever on the course behind current NCAA indoor 800 meter record holder and KMHS alumna, Jazmine Fray. Fellow junior Maya Richardson and freshman Ashley Minns ran to times that place them on the KMHS all-time top ten list. Seniors Julia Bryant and Anita Mikowski rounded out the scoring. First year Cross Country runner Lauren Bernic led the Junior varsity team of herself, Claire Burns, Clare Calabro, Olivia D’Amico, Catherine Cooke, Molly Simons, and Theresa Fox to a dominant win in the fifteen team field. One of the highlights of the day for the dedicated team was the personalized inspirational speech given to them by renown International sports commentator, Larry Rawson, pictured here with the motivated squad.

These birds weren’t interested in flying. They wanted to run.
The Kellenberg football team dominated from the opening whistle on Sunday afternoon, showcasing a dominant rushing attack as the Firebirds rolled to a 45-0 victory over Holy Trinity in CSHFL play at Mitchell Athletic Complex.
The squad racked up 429 yards on the ground, scoring on all but three of their drives to erase memories of last year’s season-ending loss to the Titans.
“We have a bunch of kids who can play,” said Kellenberg coach Kevin Hanifan. “I have a very, very talented junior group. They’ve had very good success in football and we’re just trying to feed off of that. We let kids play and try to put them in the right spot.”
Kellenberg started strong from the get-go, scoring on all three of its first-quarter drives. The Firebirds (2-0) broke tackles, weaved their way through open lanes and followed their blocks, setting Holy Trinity’s defense back on its collective toes to jump out to a 19-0 lead after the first quarter.

Kellenberg Memorial is a wonderful place to grow not only for students but also for butterflies! Latin Schoolers watched the creatures transition from an egg to a caterpillar to a chrysalis to an adult butterfly in Kellenberg Memorial’s science lab. Everything from the golden specks on the pupas to the flapping of their wings brings the material students learned in class to life. The middle schoolers themselves are also in the process of transitioning into young adults. The butterfly serves as a wonderful reminder that “you’ll never know how far you can fly until you spread your wings.”

The Lady Firebird Girl’s Cross Country team, after volunteering at Long Island’s annual “Race Against Poverty Aquathon” on Sept. 17th, once again gave back to the community. The team came en masse to help with the annual “Diva Half Marathon” race packet distribution on Friday, Sept. 29th. While their volunteerism is cherished by the thousands of LI runners, Captain Julia Bryant echoed the team’s generous heart. “We were happy to give our energy, and it also always works as a team bonding event.” The team was scheduled to leave school the next morning at 5:30 am to compete in an important race in New Jersey.

On Sunday morning, your Lady Firebirds were not on the tennis courts. Both Kellenberg Varsity Tennis Teams were at Jones Beach to participate in the Autism Speaks Walk. The Autism Speaks Walk is powered by the love of parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, relatives and supportive providers for people with autism.
Autism, also known as autism spectrum disorder, is a disorder that refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills and non-verbal communications. A person with autism has unique strengths and differences. The Autism Speaks is an organization that was founded in 2005 by Bob and Suzanne Wright (the grandparents of a child with autism).
The Autism Speaks Walk has many locations and different dates. The one on Long Island takes place at Jones Beach and is usually around early October and registration starts at 8:30 AM. The walk itself doesn’t start until 9:45-10:00 AM. Along the walk, there were many sponsors helping out and providing water like Geico, Achievement Behavior Society, and others. The 5K walk is held annually so the team hopes to see you there next year!

“Look to the LORD and his strength; seek his face always.” 1 Chronicles 16:11
More than forty students responded to the call to spread the Good News at the 2017 Day of Prayer at the Queen of Peace Residence in Queens Village, New York. The group, composed of both high school and Latin school students, volunteered their time to join in the praying of the rosary. Eighth grader Alex Menachery commented that, “The Queen of Peace Prayer Service was a time for me to interact with God.”
The senior residents and the students also prayed for each other and for vocations to religious life. At the conclusion of the prayer service, the entire congregation joined in the singing of Salve Regina.
The commingling of young and old voices filled the chapel in an uplifting manner, reminding everyone present of the incredible power of prayer. Junior Shannon Shea reflected, “Being able to attend the Queen of Peace Prayer Service allowed me to grow spiritually and experience many people from different walks of life.”
At Six Flags Wild Safari Invitational, the animals weren’t the only ones running wild. The Kellenberg Firebirds ran all over the competition and took first place in the Varsity Race. Junior Josh Michel and Senior David Lozipone finished simultaneously coming in 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Not far behind was Senior Francis O’Brien who finished in 6th place. Rounding out the top seven was Thomas Mckenna, Evan Forero, Dylan Ambroise and Andrew Suarez. Every Monday, hundreds of Kellenberg Memorial students meet with their Sodality groups from 3:00 to 3:30. The Marian Sodality was reintroduced by Bl. William Joseph Chaminade following the French Revolution as a means by which society could be re-Christianized through an experience of faith and personal relationships among the Christian community. At Kellenberg Memorial, Sodality is a cornerstone of the Apostolic life for the majority of the student body.
To mark the start of Sodality meetings for the 2017-2018 school year, all sophomore, junior, and senior sodality groups gathered for the Sodality Opening Prayer Service which marked not only the start of Sodality for the school year but also the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Society of Mary on October 2, 1817. Following the prayer service, students remained in the Maria Regina Chapel where the Blessed Sacrament was exposed for the duration of the afternoon’s prayer service.
Article by Samantha Gentile ’18: Over the weekend the Kellenberg Mock Trial team traveled to the prestigious Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut to compete at the Yale Mock Trial Bulldog Invitational. The team arrived on the Yale campus Saturday morning face to face with twenty of the best high school mock trial teams from around the country. With a mix of nerves and excitement, the team was ready to endure the busy days of trials and workshops that were ahead of them.
In their first trial of the day, Kellenberg fought valiantly in a three hour match and emerged victorious with a unanimous win over their opponents. Attorneys Samantha Gentile, Katherine Cuneo, and Lauren Glupe led the defense with the help of witnesses Veronica Tadross, Ava Boneville, and Meaghan O’Keefe. This victory instilled confidence in the team, as they have never participated in a federal level competition and had to learn the new rules and regulations that go along with a case of this nature.
Immediately after the first trial, the team was thrown into another round. The prosecution team of attorneys Samantha Gentile, Katherine Cuneo and Lauren Glupe along with witnesses Kaitlin Byrnes, Nicholas LoPresti, and Colin Crowley again amazed in court. After their second trial, the team was able to attend workshops led by some of the students on the Yale Mock Trial Team. Whether it was a tour, how to create a cross examination, or how to develope a case theory, the team learned many new things that they intend to implement into their next competition. Junior Kat Cuneo stated, “it was such an amazing experience to be around so many different teams from so many different places! It was interesting to see how different mock trial is in certain states and how the competition was intense between everyone.”
The next day the team was again faced with back to back trials and again they amazed and astonished. Finally, after 2 days, 4 trials, and 12 hours of trial time the team was able to go to the closing ceremony. Over two hundred of the best high school mock trial students were sitting in a room awaiting the results. Kellenberg left the competition happy with their results and knowing that they were among the top ten teams. But they did not leave with just that; Senior Samantha Gentile was awarded with the Outstanding Attorney Award.
Lauren Glupe, a junior on the team stated, “Yale was a great as both a learning experience and for bringing us closer as a team.” The team is excited to apply their new knowledge at their next competition and continue grow closer throughout the year. We hope to see great things from the mock trial team and wish them well this school year!
