Article by Phoenix writer Caitlin Hanratty ’25:

Former Latin Schooler Liam Brown, a Midshipman of the United States Naval Academy, came to speak to Kellenberg students on Tuesday, November 21st about what life at the Naval Academy entails.

Midshipman Brown showed students ranging from grades 7 to 12 what studying at the Naval Academy is all about. He walked his listeners through a typical day as a Naval Academy student, which begins at 5:30 A.M. and can end at 10 P.M. or later–depending on how much time a student needs to study. The daily schedule of a student, which includes multiple athletic activities, strict meal times, and several classes, truly displays how much discipline is needed to excel in the Academy.

The Academy offers a multitude of different majors, ranging from Arabic language and literature to aerospace and aeronautical engineering, so anyone can find their niche. Junior Mary Fitton remarks on what she learned about the various subjects and clubs the Naval Academy has to offer, “Hearing Midshipman Brown talk about the opportunities and the community at the Naval Academy was very eye opening. From the different service opportunities upon graduation to the different clubs you can join, he really emphasized the sense of community.”

While he is fully equipped to handle the rigorous (and rewarding) education, Midshipman Brown thanks his Marianist roots at the Latin School for allowing him to flourish in an environment meant to train him to help others. He remarked, “The time and effort the teachers put into me, my education, and my faith inspired me to want to put the same effort outward.”

Any students interested in the Naval Academy or any other military academies can contact Mr. Dugal, one of Kellenberg’s college counselors, at mrdugal@kellenberg.org.
