By Phoenix writer Michelle Paszek, ’24:

During the 2021 Lenten Season, the ARK challenged the Kellenberg family to participate in daily tasks meant to deepen one’s relationships with God and others. Certain days include giving up technology, sleeping without a pillow, and abstaining from negativity.

These challenges may seem simple at first, but some are easier said than done. However difficult these may seem, they are for the benefit of the person. According to freshman Gabriella D’Orlando, “Many challenges such as no complaining and writing a letter thanking a friend are extremely humbling. They continue to lead me to know that I am so lucky and so blessed, and now I am so grateful for everything that comes with every day.” Fellow ninth grade Gabriel Blanco stated, “Participating in the Ark Lenten Challenge has been a great addition to my Lenten Journey. I wanted to do it this year because I thought it’d be fun to give up more than just my phone.”

While some students are taking the challenge individually, others are taking it within their sodality groups. Junior Chase Bennett commented, “We do not always have the strength to complete difficult tasks alone. We need someone to help us achieve them. People are so much stronger united rather than apart.”

Whether it was saying the Rosary together or gathering for outdoor evening Sodality meetings, Lent 2021 has focused on a sense of togetherness to combat the separation that has proven to be so difficult during the pandemic era.

Junior Erin Cunnane added, “During Lent, Sodality has helped evoke the fact that no one is perfect. Knowing that teachers and your friends also have downfalls and temptations makes you grow closer in community. We are on the road to holiness together.”

Overall, the ARK Lenten Challenge is a great way to grow deeper in faith and strengthen love for others, whether it is taken as a group or as an individual. As Pope John Paul II taught, “Do not abandon yourselves to despair, we are Easter people and Hallelujah is our song.”
