Article by Theresa Gerdes ’21:

On Friday, November 15th Juniors and Seniors of Health Science Club traveled to the Ronald McDonald House on the campus of Long Island Jewish Hospital Center in New Hyde Park. The house serves as a residence for families who have children receiving treatment at Cohen’s Children’s Hospital and other local hospitals. The Health Science Club spent Friday night cooking pasta, meatballs, and salad for the families. With teamwork and communication, the club prepared and served dinner for over 85 people in under two hours. While cooking, members of the club heard stories from residents who still had a positive attitude despite many hardships.

After the evening was completed, I reflected on what she learned from the service project. I learned gratitude for the people around me and for all my blessings. I also appreciated that no matter how hard life can get, there will always be support and people who are willing to care and help you on your journey.

In addition to the individual rooms, Ronald McDonald House has a playroom, TV and video game room, gym and a computer room to provide a home-like environment. The day-to-day operations of the Ronald McDonald House cost over $3 million annually and are funded by donations and fundraising.
