On March 17, co-founder of Grassroots Films, Joe Campo, allowed for a special advanced screening for Kellenberg Memorial High School students of his new documentary, Outcasts. The film follows the work and ministry of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, a branch of friars of the Capuchin Franciscan tradition whose community was founded in 1987 in New York City with only eight friars. Today, the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal are made up of men from 14 different countries and serve in the United States, England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Nicaragua, and Honduras.
The film documents the ministry of the friars around the world. In each community featured, the friars encounter men, women, and children in desperation who have resolved to survive by any means necessary; who have turned to crime and substance abuse to cope with the hardships of life and their rejection from society. The friars in the film meet these people where they are in life and extend compassion, service, and assistance to the marginalized and forgotten about according to the Gospels.
In addition to his film work, Joe Campo is also the Director of St. Francis House, a Christ-centered and structured home designed to help young men who need a second chance in life. For many years Joe served as a drug and alcohol counselor and now fulfills the role of “surrogate father” to the young men who live at St. Francis House. He is a Third Order Franciscan and the producer of Grassroots Films.
